Escarpment Rock Walk

Curriculum-based School Tour Program for Grade 4 Science and Technology.

MAY 15-JUNE 13 & SEPTEMBER 18-OCTOBER 3, 2008

FEATURING: A nature walk up the side of the Niagara Escarpment to the "Interpretive Centre". Here the students will be introduced to how, why and when the NIAGARA ESCARPMENT was formed. Students will then venture further up the escarpment to discover the benefits of the escarpment to our farm, the uses of the escarpment in Ontario and the problem of erosion.

Sudents will examine the three types of rocks and discover that the escarpment is primarily made up of sedimentary rock. Each student will then have the opportunity to be a rockhound and hunt for the three different types of rocks. Next students will perform a vinegar test for limestone. Each student will be able to take their rocks back to the school for further examination.

After their hike back to the barn, students will be able to visit the farm animals, jump in the huge straw bales and play in the corn maze, if time allows.

REFRESHMENT: Each student will be served a peach drink.

TIMES & COST: The tour is 2 hours in length with the option of adding a 1/2 hour for lunch time. The morning tour is 9:30-11:30 (with optional lunch 11:30-12:00). The cost is $7.00 (includes GST) per student or $7.50 (includes GST) if staying for lunch. Food is not included; students bring a bag lunch. There is a minimum group charge for 20 students per tour guide. If it rains, we will have an alternate program featuring a "Rock Walk Jeopardy" game, rock sorting and hands-on erosion experiments. Payment is due at time of the tour.

New for 2008: Teachers and adult helpers are free up to a 5:1 ratio (children to adults).  Any adults over this will be charged $7 each.

TO BOOK: Please submit a Booking Request Form or call 905-878-4908 from 9:00-4:30 Monday through Friday.
